Professional Senior Architectural Technologist

Position Overview:

The Senior Architectural Technologist will work across various architectural RIBA stages, with a particular focus on stages 3 and 4. This role involves a mix of project and product development work, with an emphasis on creating detailed 3D BIM models, technical drawings, and supporting the design team in both architectural projects and product innovations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Architectural Stage involvement:
o Work across RIBA stages 1 to 4, with an initial focus on stages 3 and 4 as you become familiar with the range of products offered by THS.
2. Project & Product Development Support:
o Support two main areas within the architectural team:
 Projects
 Product Development (PD)
o The split between these areas may vary based on project demand (approx. 50/50 or as needed).
3. 3D Modelling and Technical Detailing:
o Model detailed 3D BIM models based on client briefings, sketches, or product development workshops (supplied by the Architectural Design Manager, HoA, or colleagues).
o Create 2D architectural drawings such as plans, sections, elevations, and detail pages (e.g., general arrangement drawings, site layouts, concept presentations).
4. 3D Component Library Management:
o Develop and maintain a comprehensive 3D library of architectural components (Revit, SketchUp, etc.).
5. Digital Housekeeping & Best Practices:
o Organize models efficiently, adhering to best practices in digital housekeeping (use of families, components, blocks, layers, tags, materials, project templates).
6. Presentation & Concept Development:
o Create concept presentations using tools like Photoshop, InDesign, or Canva, integrating various content types such as renders, architectural drawings, and hand sketches.
7. Technical Development of Concepts:
o Technically develop concepts, working on products in varying stages of technical resolution (50% to 85% resolved).
8. Collaboration with Design & DfMa Teams:
o Work closely with the DfMa lead and design team to resolve technical junctions and document accordingly.
o Support the DfMa lead during prototyping and construction of mock-ups at the warehouse.
9. Update Drawing Packs for Costing:
o Update drawing packs, including wall elevations, GA plans, and details, for internal costing purposes.
10. Sales & Contract Support:
• Author scope graphics to support the sales team during pre-contract negotiations and generate addendums for sales contracts.
11. Plan Resolution & Small Design Tasks:
• Once competent, take on small design tasks, such as resolving plan details.
12. Modular Design Support:
• Support modular design and customization efforts.
13. Continuous Learning & Improvement:
• Extract lessons from the project management team and apply these learnings to ensure the success of future projects.

Required Skills & Competencies:
1. Collaboration & Teamwork:
o Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary organization with a strong collaborative mindset.
o Be proactive in working with the membrane design team, understanding the relationship between membrane and architectural design (e.g., mast positions and their impact on plans).
2. Technical Proficiency:
o Strong Revit skills and a solid understanding of technical detailing.
o Ability to conduct research to solve technical challenges.
o Deep understanding of small-scale design, particularly intricate junctions, and the ability to identify cost-effective solutions.
3. Time Management & Multitasking:
o Ability to manage deadlines, balancing both short-term requests from sales/marketing teams and long-term project tasks.
4. Adaptability to Hybrid Work Environment:
o Strong communication skills for a hybrid office environment, ensuring effective virtual collaboration and timely responses when working remotely.

Desirable Additional Skills:
1. Rendering & Post-Production:
o Experience in rendering conceptual designs for presentations and marketing materials using tools such as Lumion, Photoshop, etc.
2. SketchUp Literacy:
o Proficiency in SketchUp is advantageous.
3. Understanding of Commercial Context:
o An understanding of how technical decisions should align with market demand and the commercial context in which the business operates.
4. Solution-Oriented & Curious Mindset:
o A solution-driven approach and curiosity about assembly, materiality, and innovative ways of achieving design outcomes.
