ROLE: HEAD OF DESIGN – DESIGN MANAGER – CAPE TOWN

Our Client is a market leader in the turnkey design, engineering, supply and assembly of award-winning luxury resorts, lodges and private eco-retreats globally.  They are expanding their design team to accommodate the growing needs of the business and looking for an accomplished Design Manager to head up our architecture and engineering team.

The successful candidate will be able to apply their design expertise, management skills and vision to effectively deliver design projects, advance the design team, optimise its workflows, processes and resourcing allocation and be instrumental in realizing our strategic initiatives.

You will have the overall responsibility of the design function for the company. You will lead, support, and provide day-to-day management of the design team.

Reporting and collaboration:

  • You will report directly to the CEO.
  • Collaborative with the Head of Projects to foster a dual project management function crucial for successful design-build project delivery through: Integrated planning, clear communication, common goal setting, cross-functional focus, comprehensive risk management, regular feedback loops and effective conflict resolution.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to assess potential projects for feasibility by researching and analysing associated technology, design and performance requirements, regulations, and budgetary constraints.
  • Collaborate with the sales team in negotiations with potential clients, developing conceptual presentations and marketing assets.
  • Collaborate with business development, product management and R&D functions to deliver new product designs and innovative building technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and oversee all conceptual, schematic, technical design and QC activities relating to architectural, interiors and engineering projects, including directing the design team and consultants, reviewing drafts and computer models, approving design changes and quality control procedures.
  • Produce RIBA 1- 6 plan of works reporting including: project briefs, matrices of responsibility, scope of works, design programmes, design criteria/basis of design, sustainability and risk reports.
  • Present design and reports to clients and their representatives according to prescribed project briefs, deadlines, protocols and regulations. Present in a professional format and explain relevant details in clear and persuasive language.
  • Communicate directly with managers. consultants and clients to organize and expedite projects from original conceptual design through to construction.
  • Lead the design staff recruitment, management and training efforts towards building a world class multi-disciplinary design team.
  • Assign design resourcing with personnel and approved consultants to projects as needed and provide top-level management for all project design teams.
  • Optimise standards, policies, and procedures for architectural design and engineering work as necessary to minimize costs and maximize efficiency.
  • Remain up to date with current and trending elements of sustainable design, lightweight construction, and technology.

Qualifications and skills:

Advanced Degree

Required :

  • A master’s degree in architecture is essential to the role.
  • Professional licensure

Optional:

  • RIBA accreditation
  • Certifications in relevant areas like sustainable design, project management, or LEED accreditation will bring substantial value to the role.

Design Experience

Required:

  • A minimum 5-year proven track record of working on quality design projects that require a seamless integration of architectural design and engineering solutions.

Preferred:

  • Experience in luxury hospitality projects or resort developments.
  • Experience in International project design-development with regulatory compliance demands.

Project Management Experience

  • Successful track record in managing design projects from concept to completion, demonstrating ability to oversee the design process, coordinate with stakeholders, and ensure project success.

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

  • Experience in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, engineers, manufacturers, project managers, contractors, and clients.

Technical Proficiency

  • Candidates should have a strong technical background in technical design software (notably Revit and AutoCAD drafting) enabling them to communicate effectively with design teams.

Client Management Skills

  • As the front-end spokesperson for the Company’s design, experience in managing client relationships, understanding client needs, and translating them into innovative design and engineering solutions is essential.

Problem-Solving Abilities

  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, especially in resolving design conflicts, optimizing engineering solutions, and overcoming project challenges.

Leadership

  • Ability to effectively lead, build and inspire a team.
  • Deadline driven whilst managing dynamic project, resourcing and strategic demands.
