GENERAL MANAGER – FINANCE & OPERATIONS

The Opportunity
An established and growing manufacturing, installation and shop-fitting company based near Edenvale, Johannesburg, is seeking an experienced General Manager – Finance & Operations to oversee its financial performance and overall business operations.
The company specialises in the manufacture and installation of unique products, specialised finishes and shop-fitting solutions, delivering tailored products and services to its clients.
This is a senior, hands-on management role suited to a commercially minded individual who can combine strong financial expertise with operational leadership. Working closely with the directors, you will be responsible for improving profitability, streamlining operations, strengthening internal systems and ensuring that the business is well positioned for continued growth.
The successful candidate will be equally comfortable analysing financial performance, managing operational challenges and leading people to deliver measurable results.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Business Performance
• Oversee budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, financial reporting and working capital management.
• Maintain effective financial controls across accounts, payroll, customer payments, supplier commitments and expenditure.
• Monitor product and project profitability, identify cost-saving opportunities and improve overall margins.
• Analyse actual costs against budgets and quotations, addressing inefficiencies, wastage and unnecessary expenses.
• Work with external accountants and financial advisers to ensure accurate reporting and compliance.
Operations, Manufacturing & Installation
• Oversee and coordinate procurement, stock control, warehousing, manufacturing, installations and after-sales service.
• Ensure production schedules, resources and materials are aligned with customer commitments and delivery deadlines.
• Improve operational workflows, productivity, quality control and cost management across manufacturing and shop-fitting activities.
• Identify and resolve bottlenecks while reducing delays, rework and material wastage.
• Ensure effective coordination between departments, from initial sales and project planning through to production, installation and final delivery.
• Maintain operational readiness across facilities and equipment, with appropriate health and safety procedures in place.
Leadership & Business Management
• Manage and support departmental managers, establishing clear responsibilities, performance standards and accountability.
• Implement effective management processes, performance reviews and reporting structures.
• Drive the successful implementation and adoption of the company’s developing operational management platform.
• Ensure business systems, including Xero, are used effectively to improve financial visibility, workflow management and accountability.
• Work closely with the directors on business planning, operational improvements, risk management and future growth opportunities.
Minimum Requirements
• Proven experience in a senior financial management, general management or combined finance and operations role.
• Strong knowledge of budgeting, cash-flow management, management accounts, financial controls and business costing.
• Previous experience within manufacturing, production, engineering, shop fitting, installations or a similar product-based operational environment.
• Demonstrated ability to manage teams, coordinate multiple departments and improve business processes.
• Strong commercial acumen, analytical skills and the ability to make informed decisions based on financial and operational data.
• Experience implementing or improving business systems, procedures and performance management structures.
• Excellent organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
• A practical, hands-on management style with the confidence to take ownership and drive results.
Advantageous Experience
• A relevant qualification in Finance, Accounting, Commerce or Business Management.
• Experience with Xero, inventory management, production costing, bills of materials and job profitability.
• Exposure to integrated operational management systems or business process automation.
• Experience working within an owner-managed or growing manufacturing and installation business.
