Senior Operations Manager – Interior Design and Architectural Firm based in Cape Town
Location: Cape Town, South Africa (Office-Based, Full-Time)

An established and highly respected Interior Design and Architectural practice based in Cape Town is seeking an exceptional Senior Operations Manager to join its executive leadership team.
This is a critical senior leadership appointment for a dynamic and commercially minded professional who possesses a strong architectural background combined with proven operational management experience. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in driving the firm’s operational excellence, strategic growth, project delivery, and overall business performance.
Candidates must come from an Architectural background and be qualified as an Architect, Interior Architect, or Senior Architectural Technologist. Applications from candidates without relevant architectural industry experience will not be considered.
The Opportunity
This role is ideal for an experienced professional who understands the complexities of running a design-led business and can effectively bridge the gap between creative excellence and operational performance. The Senior Operations Manager will work closely with the Directors and senior leadership team to ensure the successful delivery of projects, effective resource management, financial performance, and sustainable business growth.
The successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day operations of the practice while implementing systems, processes, and strategic initiatives that support the firm’s long-term vision.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
• Partner with the Directors to develop and implement the firm’s strategic objectives.
• Drive operational efficiencies and support business growth initiatives.
• Develop and execute operational strategies that align with company goals and project delivery requirements.
• Identify opportunities for expansion, process improvement, and increased profitability.
Operational Management
• Lead and oversee the daily operations of the practice.
• Ensure projects are appropriately resourced and delivered efficiently.
• Implement and refine systems, policies, and procedures to improve operational performance.
• Establish measurable operational KPIs and monitor performance across departments.
• Drive accountability and performance throughout the business.
Project & Resource Management
• Oversee project planning, staffing, and resource allocation across multiple teams.
• Work closely with project leaders to ensure successful project delivery.
• Monitor project timelines, budgets, profitability, and resource utilization.
• Identify and proactively resolve operational bottlenecks and project risks.
Financial & Commercial Oversight
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and reporting.
• Monitor business performance and profitability.
• Review operational costs and identify opportunities for improved efficiencies.
• Support contract negotiations, commercial decision-making, and risk management initiatives.
Team Leadership & Development
• Lead and mentor senior managers and department heads.
• Foster a high-performance culture focused on collaboration, accountability, and excellence.
• Support talent development, succession planning, and organisational growth.
• Assist with recruitment and strategic workforce planning.
Systems & Process Improvement
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
• Implement operational best practices and scalable systems.
• Improve project management, reporting, communication, and workflow processes.
• Support technology adoption and operational innovation where beneficial.
Requirements
Essential
• Professional qualification as an Architect, Interior Architect, or Senior Architectural Technologist.
• Minimum 10–15 years’ experience within the Architecture, Interior Architecture, or Design industry.
• Previous senior leadership experience managing teams, operations, and project delivery.
• Strong commercial and financial acumen.
• Proven experience managing complex projects and multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent understanding of architectural project lifecycles and design practice operations.
• Experience implementing operational systems, policies, and business processes.
• Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to operate strategically while maintaining oversight of day-to-day operations.
Highly Advantageous
• Previous experience as a Operations Manager/Director, Practice Manager, General Manager, Managing Director, or similar executive-level position.
• Experience within a large architectural, interior design, or multidisciplinary design practice.
• Exposure to international projects and multi-office operations.
• Strong understanding of business growth strategies and organisational development.
