An exciting opportunity is available for a Senior Interior Designer / Studio Lead to join an established and growing design environment in Johannesburg.
We are looking for a strong creative designer with leadership potential who can take ownership of high-quality commercial interior projects while playing an important role in developing and mentoring the wider design team.
This is an opportunity for someone who has progressed beyond purely hands-on design and is ready to take greater responsibility for creative direction, project leadership, client engagement and team development.
The Role
The successful candidate will be involved across the full design process, from interpreting the initial brief and developing concepts through to design development, documentation coordination and project delivery.
You will be responsible for ensuring that the creative vision of each project is maintained throughout the process, while working closely with technical and project teams to ensure designs are practical, coordinated and achievable.
The role will suit someone who enjoys being both creative and hands-on, but who is also comfortable taking the lead, making decisions and guiding other designers.
Key Responsibilities
• Take creative ownership of interior design projects from initial brief through to project completion.
• Develop distinctive and commercially viable design concepts based on client requirements and project objectives.
• Produce and oversee design presentations, mood boards, material selections, layouts and design development.
• Present concepts and design proposals confidently to clients and key stakeholders.
• Ensure the original design vision is maintained as projects progress into detailed design and construction.
• Collaborate with technical team members to ensure designs are accurately documented and coordinated.
• Review drawings and documentation to ensure accuracy, quality and alignment with the overall design concept.
• Provide direction, guidance and mentoring to junior and intermediate designers.
• Coordinate with consultants, contractors, suppliers, joiners and other project stakeholders.
• Identify potential design, detailing, budget or construction issues and assist in finding practical solutions.
• Assist with the development and implementation of efficient studio processes, design standards and quality-control procedures.
• Manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining a high standard of design output.
• Take an increasingly active role in the creative leadership and development of the studio.
Requirements
• Minimum 5 years’ professional Interior Design experience.
• A strong portfolio demonstrating creative concept development and completed commercial interior projects.
• Proven ability to manage projects through the various stages of the design process.
• Strong understanding of interior architecture, materials, finishes, lighting, joinery, detailing and construction.
• Good Revit knowledge with the ability to understand and review technical documentation and coordinate effectively with technical team members.
• Strong creative and conceptual design skills.
• Previous experience supervising, mentoring or guiding other designers would be highly advantageous.
• Excellent presentation and communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail with good organisational and time-management abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
• A practical, solutions-focused approach to design and project delivery.
• Valid driver’s licence and own vehicle required for client meetings and site visits.
Advantageous Skills & Experience
Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:
• Commercial interior design and fit-out.
• Hospitality, retail, gaming or other high-end commercial environments.
• Working with contractors, joinery manufacturers, suppliers and specialist consultants.
• Managing external designers, freelancers or visualisation teams.
• Establishing design processes, standards and quality-control systems.
• D5, Lumion, Twinmotion, 3ds Max/V-Ray or other rendering and visualisation software.
• Experience working within a fast-paced design studio where multiple projects are managed simultaneously.
